Keep Your Phone Number

Switch to DexterVOIP today and keep your number! You don't have to memorize a new phone number, nor do your family and friends. Most numbers qualify for transfer, but there are some important guidelines to consider. Please review the information below to see if your number qualifies. After you have signed up for Dexter VOIP you can request the transfer of your existing phone number to your DexterVOIP account.

General Number Transfer Guidelines:

  • Make sure your existing number is in the serviceable DexterVOIP area. Click here to see if number transfer is available to you.
  • Test DexterVOIP with your home security system, satellite TV service and/or TiVo before attempting to transfer a number associated with that system.
  • Make sure you have disabled any specialty features on the existing phone line such as distinctive ring, ringmaster, call forwarding or shared lines.
  • You can transfer your cellular number to Dexter VOIP but your cellular carrier will disconnect your cell service as part of the transfer process. You may also be asked to provide your Social Security Number.
  • Be sure to provide us with the exact billing address and billing name on record with your current telephone provider to help us get your number transferred as quickly as possible. This includes any capitalization, punctuation and/or abbreviations.
  • Make sure there is not a line freeze or pending order on your account.
  • Do not cancel your existing phone service until you have received notification from DexterVOIP that the transfer process is complete.

Important Guidelines for DSL Number Transfers:
If you are transferring your number from your existing DSL service, you will need to follow these important steps to make sure your DSL service is not disconnected:

  • Contact your DSL service provider and request your DSL be placed on a "Dry Loop" or assigned a "Virtual Number." This will allow the phone company to separate your account into two numbers - one for your home phone line and one for your DSL service.
  • Once you have confirmed your DSL service has its own unique number and is not connected to your home phone number, login to your DexterVOIP account and submit a number transfer request.

After you have signed up for Dexter VOIP you can submit your transfer request by logging into your Member Account Manager.

Transferring your number to DexterVOIP may take up to 45 days. In the meantime, you will be provided with a temporary DexterVOIP phone number so you can start using your DexterVOIP service immediately. We'll keep you posted on your number transfer status and will send you an email notification when complete.
